Chapter 28: Zakat


Around the second year of Hijri - Zakat was made compulsory for the rich Muslims.

The rules of Zakat was different from that of the Jews of Medina who practised something similar called Tzedakah.

Zakat was 2.5 percent of wealth left over for a whole year while the Jewish one was 10 percent.

Prophet (SAW) sent his companions to various tribes to collect the Zakat - this was very important for Muslims to obey.

This money could only be used for 8 categories:

Zakat and Sadaqah were different.
